Panama’s ex-dictator Manuel Noriega dies at 83

Manuel Noriega, the former Panamanian dictator, has passed away at the age of 83 in Panama City following a brain surgery this year.

Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela wrote in his Twitter account that “the death of Manuel A. Noriega closes a chapter in our history.”

The former dictator had undergone an operation in March to remove a brain tumor but suffered a hemorrhage and had been in a coma since a second surgical intervention.  Continue reading “Panama’s ex-dictator Manuel Noriega dies at 83”

US-Saudi Arabia seal weapons deal worth $110 billion

United States President Donald Trump has closed an arms deal with Saudi Arabia worth almost $110 billion, and extending up to $350 billion over 10 years.

The White House announced on Saturday the $110 billion deal will take effect immediately.

“This package of defense equipment and services support the long-term security of Saudi Arabia and  the (Persian) Gulf region in the face of Iranian threats, while also bolstering the Kingdom’s ability to contribute to counter terrorism operations across the region, reducing the burden on the U.S. military to conduct those operations,” the White House said in a statement.

This Uninhabited Tropical Island Has the World’s Highest Density of Plastic Pollution…

One of the last things you would normally expect to find on an uninhabited island in the South Pacific is plastic, and yet the beaches of Henderson Island are riddled with nearly 40 million pieces of plastic, ranging from toothbrushes to shopping bags and bottles.

According to a recent report published in the in “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences” journal, Henderson Island currently has zero inhabitants and around 17 tonnes of plastic trash, with around 13,000 pieces washing up on its shores every single day. The tiny patch of land has been found by marine scientists to have the highest density of debris recorded anywhere in the world.

This Living Building in Bogota Is the World’s Largest Vertical Garden..

Edificio Santalaia, a plant-covered building in the middle of Bogota, Colombia, is considered one of the most amazing urban gardens ever created. With over 33,000 Sq. feet of plants covering the building’s 11 stories (9 above ground and 2 underground), this is the world’s largest vertical garden.

The result of a collaboration between Spanish green designers Paisajismo Urbano and Colombian company Groncol, this stunning vertical garden was completed in December 2015, after eight months of planning, and another eight months of hard work. Today, it is often referred to as “the green heart of Bogota”, and acts both as an icon of sustainability, as well as a reminder of the important role that plants play in our daily lives.

Philippines – will no longer accept grants from EU

The Philippines will no longer accept grants from the European Union, the EU delegation to Manila says, following repeated tirades from President Rodrigo Duterte over its criticism of his deadly drug war.

“The Philippine government has informed us that they (will) no longer accept new EU grants,” the delegation said in a brief statement.
